Philosophy of Professionalism
My Philosophy of professionalismI believe professionalism is more than the way a teacher dresses or behaves towards the other members of the school and his/her students. Teachers have to be professional in the way they dress, behave, practice teaching, and present their knowledge.
At first, when a teacher enters into a school they must dress according to their job. Their attire must be presentable in a way that is appropriate to be around students and their parents. Dressing like a professional allows them to be taken seriously by their co-workers and the students in the school. Professional wear is clothing that does not reveal too much skin, but is comfortable to wear when working at the school for almost 7 hours a day, and dealing with students. If a teacher was to dress unprofessional and sloppy, they would not be taken seriously by others, and they will be portrayed as disorganized and careless. Professionalism is also seen when teachers arrive to school on time and have their lessons ready to teach to the students. An unorganized teacher models to his/her students to be unorganized as well. This is not what a good teacher should do. Professional teachers should should follow the duties and responsibilities of the Education Act, in order to treat students with respect, care, and equality. A professional act should allow teachers to commit and care for their students learning. They should treat students with equitably, and with respect and are sensitive to factors that influence students learning. Remember every student has a different learning style. Therefore professional teachers should act according to their role and teach with care and respect. All teachers should demonstrate professionalism by taking on a leadership role in the learning community. They should promote and create collaborative, safe, and supportive learning communities for their students. This will then encourage their students to want to come to school, learn, and participate in their own learning and the teacher's lessons. Professional teachers should recognize their leadership role and their shared responsibilities in order to promote student success. Professional teachers should demonstrate professional practice at all time when in the school. Professional practice is done when teachers apply their professional knowledge and experience to facilitate student learning. "They use appropriate pedagogy assessment and evaluation, resources and technology in planning for and responding to the needs of individual students and learning communities," ("Ontario College of Teachers" 2015). Professional teachers should be willing to give it their all when teaching their students. They should take on leadership roles, and act as role models to students. Teachers should always practice professionalism when they enter into the school environment. Professionalism allows teachers to be role models, demonstrate a leadership role, and allows students to engage in their learning and strive for success. Professional teachers are active in their students learning, and are always doing anything they can to make their students to enjoy learning and strive for success.
